DAY 1: Evidence-based Strategies for Training and Supporting Human-Service Staff

Despite serving as effective change agents for clients, behavior analysts often struggle with motivating and supporting the staff they supervise. This workshop is designed to teach participants about evidence-based staff training and performance management procedures. First, it will introduce participants to a research-supported and resource-sensitive approach to training. Next, it will describe a functional approach to supporting staff and addressing performance problems. Specifically, it will teach participants how to use the Performance Diagnostic Checklist – Human Services, including how to administer and score the assessment, and how to identify indicated interventions given the assessment results. Last, Prof DiGennaro Reed will share the results of a three-year consultation effort to introduce pyramidal behavioral skills training to an organization. Throughout the workshop, experimental data and case studies supporting the effectiveness of a behavior analytic approach to staff training and professional development will be shared.

Learning Objectives

  1. The participant will be able to describe why targeting staff performance is important.
  2. The participant will be able to identify and describe the components of behavioral skills training and an evidence-based approach to performance management of staff.
  3. The participant will be able to discuss results of studies evaluating the components of behavioral skills training and ways to enhance resource efficiency of recommended training practices.
  4. The participant will be able to describe the purpose of the PDC-HS.
  5. The participant will be able to describe how to administer and score the PDC-HS as well as how to identify an indicated intervention.
  6. The participant will be able to discuss the results of at least one study that lends support to adopting a functional approach to staff support.

CPDs/CEUs:

3 Supervision CPDs/CEUs on offer - included in the registration fee.

DAY 2: The Behavior Analyst as Supervisor: Creating Advanced Supervision and Mentoring Repertoires

Practicing behavior analysts and behavior analysts in academic settings often provide supervision for young professionals who are pursuing certification as a behavior analyst. Effective supervision is critical to the quality of ongoing behavioral services, the professional development of the supervisee, the continued growth of the supervisor, and the overall development of our field and its’ practice. Though there are now training and CEU requirements for supervising those who are accruing hours towards the experience requirement for certification; few resources exist to guide supervisor activities and recommended practice. This workshop summarizes the content of Building and Sustaining Meaningful and Effective Relationships as a Supervisor and Mentor  by LeBlanc, Sellers, & Ala’I (2020) with detailed strategies and resources for structuring the supervisory experience and ongoing mentorship. The topics covered include a) building the relationship, b) using self-reflection as a tool to enhance your supervisor skills, and c) what to teach supervisees.

Learning Objectives

  • Attendees will be able to describe several strategies for building and maintaining strong supervisory relationships.
  • Attendees will be able to describe strategies for developing a comprehensive approach to the content and pedagogy of their supervision.
  • Attendees will complete self-reflection and self-assessment activities that enhance their understanding of the influences that shape their supervisor style.
  • Attendees will be able to identify several pivotal professional repertoires such as ethical decision making, problem solving, and professional relationship skills and how to teach them

CPDs/CEUs:

3 Supervision CPDs/CEUs on offer - included in the registration fee.
