The UKiBA Competence Standards
All UKiBAs must complete the UKiBA Competence Standards by the end of their second year of registration as a UKiBA. The UKiBA Competence Standards comprise 54 competencies. These are a subset of the competencies of the UKBA(cert) Supervision and can count toward the completion of the UKBA(cert) Standards as long as the signed-off competencies are not greater than 5-years old at the time of applying for the UKBA(cert). For details on the competencies, refer to the UKiBA Manual.
Any UKiBAs who do not complete the competencies by the end of the second year of registration will not be able to renew as a UKiBA. They will be invited to join as a UKvBA and may continue to complete the UKiBA Supervision and Competence Standards. Upon completion of these standards, they will be able to re-apply as a UKiBA.
You will need to appoint a supervisor for your competencies. Your supervisor can be any fully certified UKBA(cert) who has completed all competencies who is fully searchable on the UK-SBA Register. Please refer to the UKiBA Manual for full guidance on supervision.
Safety to Practice Items
All UK-SBA registrants must demonstrate Safety to Practice items. You must hold and provide evidence for each of the following:
- Current liability insurance covering your behaviour analytic practice (must be issued by a UK provider).
- A criminal records disclosure issued by a UK Government body (must be issued within 3 years of your current UK-SBA member registration date).
- Safeguarding Training relevant to the population with which you are working (must be delivered by a UK organisation and must have been completed within 3 years of your current UK-SBA member registration date).
Evidence for each of the Safety to Practice items will be required as part of the registration process. You will not be able to register as a UKBA(cert) without this evidence.
For further details go to the UK-SBA Register Requirements.
Maintaining Certification
Each year, a UKBA(cert) must renew their certification. There are several requirements to do this.
Safety to Practice
To be able to renew your certification, your Safety to Practise items must be in date with evidence uploaded to your account. See above for details of these Safety to Practise items.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
All UKiBAs are expected to engage in continuing professional development throughout their period of certification. In order to renew your certification each year, you will need to provide evidence of 16 Approved Professional Development (APD) units collected within that year of certification. BACB Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are also accepted. For full details on APD Requirements, please refer to the UKiBA Manual.
Clinical Supervision
All UKiBAs require ongoing supervision from a full UKBA(cert). The frequency of this supervision is dependent on the amount of time you work in your UKiBA-related role.
- More than 80 hours per month – a minimum of 2 hours of supervision per month, in at least two sessions, and at least one week apart.
- Fewer than 80 hours per month – a minimum of 1.5 hours of supervision with a minimum of one session per month.
A minimum of 1 hour of supervision each month must be conducted 1:1. The remaining hours may can be conducted as group supervision up to a ratio of 1:5.
There is an example record template to record your supervision. You may use this or create your own records, but this must be completed and uploaded to your account to evidence your supervision hours to meet the requirements for your certification renewal.
