Session 1
Natalie Savage: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and the DNA-V model and Health and Wellbeing Education in Special Schools
(CPD/CEU: 3 Learning)
The first part of this session will be led by Natalie Savage (BCBA). This will be an experiential session for attendees focusing on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and the DNA-V model. The session will include breakout room activities and group discussions.
The second part of this session has been prepared by Dr Corinna Grindle (BCBA-D) and Dr Magda Apanasionok but is presented by Natalie Savage.
Natalie will talk through their work on adapting a health and wellbeing curriculum based on the DNA-V and the 6 ways to wellbeing model for use in special schools. The co-production process and findings from a pilot study will be described. The session will include breakout room activities with plenty of time for discussion about ACT, DNA-V and health and wellbeing education in special schools.
Session 2
Courtney Tarbox: ABA Still Finding its Heart: Minimizing Extinction & Affirming Client Assent
(CPD/CEU: 3 Learning )
The field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) appears to be at a turning point in its evolution, where researchers and practitioners are increasingly calling for our field to emphasize compassion (Taylor, LeBlanc, & Nosik, 2019; Rodriguez, Tarbox, & Tarbox, 2023). In addition, literature has suggested that a compassion-focused approach to ABA services may improve provider-client therapeutic relationships and has the potential to improve program acceptability and clinical outcomes experienced by our clients. In this presentation, radical compassion will be defined as a foundation for applied behavior analytic services. Although there seems to be a broad-based consensus on the need for increasing compassion, many are still calling for dissemination of practical strategies for how our procedures can be modified in this direction. This presentation will provide practical strategies for implementing assent-informed practice, minimizing the use of escape extinction and making extinction as a procedure more compassionate when it is deemed necessary. This presentation will offer real-life strategies that we can implement with the families that we serve, with the hope of leading with our hearts, while upholding the integrity of our science.
Session 3
Nichola Booth: Autism In The Air - Try Before You Fly (1 Learning CPD/CEU)
Amy O'Keefe: Applied Behaviour Analysis & the Human Rights Agenda (2 EDI CPDs/CEUs)
(Total - 3 CEU/CPD: 1 Learning + 2 EDI)
Nichola’s talk will focus on ‘Autism in the air – try before you fly’ an initiative conducted in collaboration with Belfast City Airport since 2014. Nichola was instrumental in helping develop this programme and will discuss the project and how it was established and how it has continued to grow and advance. This initiative allows 50 families the opportunity to visit the airport annually, providing them with a 'practice run' to familiarise themselves with the environment before embarking on a holiday. This is the first event of its kind offered across the island of Ireland and the United Kingdom and was featured on BBC1’s 'The One Show.'
Amy’s talk will aim to:
- address issues around Human Rights and Applied Behaviour Analysis, with particular focus on the neurodiversity movement and Autism.
- present critiques levelled at the field of ABA from neurodiversity advocates.
- address where the field of ABA may be perceived as being in violation of Human Rights.
- address what we as field “get right”.
- discuss how we can adapt the science of Behaviour Analysis to ensure we practice in line with international Human Rights conventions.
Session 4
Maggie Hoerger: Supervision workshop: Training Ethical Practitioners
(CEU/CPD: 3 Supervision)
Please note the supervision section will not contribute towards the 8 hour training required to become a supervisor.
The workshop is intended for certificants who are providing or receiving supervision using the UKBA(cert) competence framework. We will consider the UK-SBA practice values and attendees will consider how those values are reflected in their practice.
